The National Guard of Cyprus is worse now than it was before 1974

The Center for Strategic Studies (CSS) stated that the Cyprus National Guard is now in a more vulnerable position than before 1974, despite organizational improvements and better equipment.

The publication emphasizes that from a military and geographical point of view, Cyprus faced serious difficulties, which worsened after the Turkish invasion.

The center also criticized the recruitment of women for voluntary military service, calling this step “clumsy” because it was not based on research, but only on rumors about the possible interest of women in the service. According to CSS, despite the improvement in the organization and training of personnel, the current situation of the National Guard is much worse than before 1974.

The organization also stressed that the decision to recruit women should have been more thoughtful and based on a detailed analysis.

Recall that on September 8, the President of Cyprus announced that after graduating from state lyceums and technical schools, girls will have the opportunity to serve in the army. The minimum service life is six months, and the maximum is 14 months.
