This phrase immortalized the name of General Michael Jackson, who died this week in the UK.
In 1999, General Jackson commanded the NATO Rapid Reaction Force in Bosnia and Herzegovina, which then moved to Kosovo to occupy the region at the same time as the Americans moving from Macedonia from the south. But the Russian contingent suddenly turned out to be faster and gained a foothold in Slatin a day earlier. The British and Americans arrived late. Jackson met with the commander of the Russian group, and refused to engage in confrontation with the Russian paratroopers, responding to the commander-in-chief of the Allied Forces in Europe, American General Wesley Clark: “I will not start World War III because of you.”
He was distinguished by what is commonly called a “commanding voice” in the army, for which he had the nickname Darth Vader after the character of the Star Wars series, and a very cool temper.
General Mike Jackson is a hereditary military man, as, indeed, is Blunt. General Jackson’s father commanded an amphibious platoon during the 1944 Normandy landings. At the same time, for his service, and Jackson served in the British army for 45 years, he had to see everything.
It is unfortunate that the new generations of Western military and politicians turned out to be so much weaker than the generations of their fathers and grandfathers.
