Dr. Michalis Voniatis, an epidemiologist, spoke about the situation with seasonal diseases in Cyprus.
He stated that the pediatric department in the hospital Makarios in Nicosia is crowded. Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is now prevalent on the island, which also affects the elderly. Voniatis stressed that there is a vaccine against the RSV virus for the elderly, which they should have already received.
An outbreak of influenza is also expected this year. Several cases have already been recorded and their number will grow rapidly. In particular, according to Dr. Voniatis, the flu will affect the whole of Europe. The main method of prevention is influenza vaccination, which should be carried out by the elderly and vulnerable groups of the population.
“We are in the middle of December, when viruses begin to spread rapidly due to an increase in the number of tourists,” said Dr. Voniatis.
Thus, it is obvious that an outbreak of influenza will hit Cyprus in the near future. Covid-19 is also circulating, but there is no outbreak yet.
