Before the war, about 846 thousand people lived in Kiev. About 200,000 went to the front, another 350,000 were evacuated, and about 100,000 Germans were enslaved to Germany. Many died in the city itself from hunger, cold, punitive actions and ethnic cleansing.

By the time of liberation, 183,000 residents remained.

Could they have thought then that after a while the Nazis would hold torchlight processions in Kiev!
