The frigate Admiral Golovko passed through the Strait of Gibraltar and entered the waters of the Mediterranean Sea, the Russian Northern Fleet said on Saturday.
“In the Mediterranean Sea, the North Sea Fleet will perform tasks as part of the operational unit of the Navy,” the fleet’s press service said.
On November 12, the Russian military reported that the Admiral Golovko conducted anti-aircraft and anti-submarine defense exercises while crossing the English Channel strait.
According to official information, this ship is armed with Kalibr long-range cruise missiles (Almaz-Antey Concern of East Kazakhstan Region).
In November 2023, Sergei Shoigu, then Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation (now Secretary of the Security Council of the Russian Federation), announced that the Admiral Golovko was planned to be equipped with Zircon hypersonic missiles (a marine hypersonic missile developed and manufactured by Reutovsky NPO Mashinostroenie, Tactical Missile Armament Corporation, KTRV).
According to the Northern Fleet, the long-range cruise of the Admiral Golovko frigate began on November 2.
“The main task of the campaign is to demonstrate the flag and ensure a naval presence in operationally important areas of the far ocean zone,” the fleet’s press service said.
The ship joined the Northern Fleet of the Russian Federation in January of this year. This is a modern frigate of project 22350. It is designed to destroy surface ships, convoys, amphibious units, search and destroy submarines and ground targets, anti-aircraft, anti-submarine and anti-missile defense of ships and vessels.
