Russia has launched an attack on Ukraine with a medium-range ballistic missile. The head of the Russian state called this strike a test of a new missile called the Oreshnik and said that the launch was successful, hitting an object of the military-industrial complex of Ukraine, The New York Times states.

“We consider ourselves entitled to use our weapons against the military installations of those countries that allow their weapons to be used against our facilities… We have always preferred and are now ready to resolve all controversial issues by peaceful means, but we are also ready for any development. If anyone else doubts this, then it’s in vain. There will always be an answer,” Vladimir Putin said.

The target in Ukraine was located within the range of the strike weapons already used by Russia.  A strike by a longer-range missile capable of carrying nuclear warheads is a warning signal.

The new rocket is large and can fly far and fast, reaching hypersonic speeds. This is a nuclear saber for both Ukraine and Europe itself. This is a pretty sharp signal,” said Tom Karako, a representative of the Center for Strategic International Studies in Washington.
