Russia and Iran have signed a strategic partnership agreement

The document was signed shortly after Russia concluded defense agreements with the DPRK and Belarus. According to the Iranian authorities, the agreement with Moscow is not aimed at creating a military alliance.

Prior to that, the leaders held talks in the Kremlin, which Putin called thorough.

Active work on the new agreement began in January 2022 after Ebrahim Raisi’s visit to Moscow.

As reported on January 11, the Iranian Ambassador to Kazem Jalali of Russia, the document consists of a preamble and 47 articles that will define the countries’ relations in all spheres for at least the next 20 years. “In order to update and draft a new agreement, the Foreign Ministers of the two countries agreed that the Islamic Republic of Iran will prepare a draft. We have prepared a draft and handed it over to the Russian side,” he said in an interview with the Iranian news agency IRNA. — It took about two and a half to three years, there were many meetings and discussions, numerous changes were made, until finally an agreement was reached.”

Iranian officials stressed that the document does not envisage the creation of a defense alliance. As stated by Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, “the agreement includes cooperation in the field of security and defense, but does not pursue the goal of creating a military alliance.”
