The first complex of the famous Israeli air defense system “Iron Dome” has been deployed in Cyprus. The system has already been placed at the disposal of the National Guard and put on alert.

This step is the result of years of negotiations that began under the government of Nicos Anastasiades in October 2021. At that time, Cyprus was actively consulting with Israel on the acquisition of an adapted version of the Iron Dome. The difficulties of the negotiations have been overcome only in recent months, and the deal has been finalized already under the current government of Nikos Christodoulides.

The first installment of the Iron Dome is just the beginning. It is expected that the arrival of additional systems will complete the creation of a new Cyprus anti-missile “umbrella” capable of defending against a wide range of threats, from enemy fighters to missiles. In addition, it is planned to expand the capabilities of the complex to combat drones in the future.

The system deployed in Cyprus will be integrated with a similar project in Greece, which, according to Defense Minister Nikos Dendias, will be completed in 2-3 years. As a result, a single defensive “umbrella” will be created covering Cyprus, Crete and the Aegean Sea.

In parallel with the strengthening of air defense, the first batch of French Airbus H145M attack helicopters is expected to arrive in Cyprus. They will replace the Russian Mi-35, which Cyprus previously sold to Serbia. This event is projected to take place closer to Christmas, completing another chapter of the country’s defense strategy update.

The new Iron Dome and French helicopters will significantly strengthen Cyprus’ defense capabilities, becoming an important part of the Eastern Mediterranean’s security system.
