At the same time, a debate has begun in Cyprus about whether the island is ready to withstand natural phenomena such as strong earthquakes and tsunamis. Panagiotis Liasidis, a representative of the civil Defense, said that his department is trying to take all necessary actions to prevent this from happening. There is an Egledas plan, which specifies what all services should do. Each service should develop its own plan based on this scheme.

The Director of the Geological Exploration Department acknowledged the shortage of personnel, but refuted the criticism of the head of the Seismological Center, Silvanas Pilida, for the fact that no measures are being taken to prevent a tsunami.

“I see no reason for such a reaction, since the announcement does not say that the program has been completed. The goal is to complete and create an early warning system,” said Christodoulos Hadjigeorgiu, Head of the Geological Survey Department.

We are talking about the UNESCO CoastWave program, which aims to recognize the city of Larnaca as ready for a tsunami, that is, ready to withstand the possibility of this phenomenon. The program was presented to the republic in 2001 and was supposed to be completed in 2024, 23 years later, however, for practical reasons, an extension of its completion date in 2025 was requested.

Efthymis Lekkas, President of the Greek Earthquake Planning and Protection Organization, called for cooperation between Cyprus and Greece.

“As president of OASP, I can come to Cyprus and discuss issues with colleagues who have experience, but mainly discuss aspects of the service that can be structured and restructured in Cyprus,” he said. Lekkas.
