“We need to completely rethink our attitude towards the environment”

According to Environment Commissioner Antonia Theodosiou, if Cyprus really wants to achieve climate neutrality, it needs to “completely rethink its attitude to the environment,” as well as how it designs and uses urban space.

“We need a holistic approach that takes into account, includes and integrates energy, transport and natural resource management, circular economy, and takes into account tangible and intangible cultural heritage, social well-being and resilience of cities to the climate crisis,” she said at a seminar in Limassol.

“The European Union’s green Transition and green Deal program concerns not only tree planting, but also our daily actions,” she added.

“We pay fines for polluting emissions, and our energy production is mainly driven by fossil fuels. It is necessary to dramatically increase the share of renewable energy in our energy mix and introduce it.

Another way to balance these pollutants and pay fewer fines is to increase the area of forests and increase biodiversity, as these areas absorb and store carbon dioxide,” said Theodosiu.
