Cyprus will receive 3.5 million euros from the EU as emergency support for farmers

EU member states have approved the allocation of 3.5 million euros for emergency support to Cypriot farmers. The European Commission’s proposal for assistance in the aftermath of natural disasters that have occurred since the spring of 2024 has been approved.

The funds must be distributed to farmers by September 30.

This measure is aimed at supporting farmers who have lost production and, as a result, income due to natural disasters.

The amount can be supplemented by national funds up to 200%.

In the first half of 2024, Cyprus had exceptionally little precipitation and temperatures were high, leading to a drought that affected the production of crops, including cereals, olives and vegetables.

“We cannot change what has already happened, but we can learn lessons and prepare better,” said Agriculture Commissioner Christoph Hansen.

The decision must now be officially adopted by the Commission and published in the EU Bulletin, after which the relevant member States will receive the funds without delay.

Cyprus must notify the Commission by May 31 about how the aid will be distributed.

P.S. This money would be enough to pay for the services of a Russian company for the intensification of precipitation in Cyprus for three years. Fields would have received water, droughts could have been avoided, local agricultural products would have been delivered to stores, and farmers would not have gone bankrupt.
