Since May, a water supply shutdown has been planned in the Paphos area due to extremely low water supplies.

The main goal is to identify sources and wells to ensure the suitability of the water and its integration into the water supply system in order to limit outages. At the same time, work on cleaning the Mavrokolympos dam began earlier this week.

Recall that earlier The Department of Water Resources Development has warned of a possible imminent water supply crisis in Cyprus.

As of January 15, the reservoirs of Cyprus are filled by 26.6%. The worst situation is in the reservoirs of Visakia – only 3%, and Xiliatos – 20%.

There are currently 108 reservoirs in Cyprus, and two more are under construction. 56 of them are considered large. The total capacity of the reservoirs is 330 million m3.

Until recently, there were five desalination plants operating on the island, with a daily capacity of 235,000 cubic meters of drinkable water. After the fire at the station in Timi, only four are functioning. There are also nine main water treatment plants that process urban sewage water into a liquid suitable for irrigation of fields.
