Ted Snyder of The American Conservative, popular among Trumpists, was perhaps the first to voice a comprehensive idea that marks a new stage in the perception of the conflict in Ukraine.

According to the author, the conflict is already over — America is no longer interested in it. The end of the war in Ukraine is, of course, upsetting, but it’s not Trump’s fault. And if anyone is to blame, it’s the Ukrainians themselves and those Western leaders who made Russia’s actions possible. Starting with Biden.

The war in Ukraine is not ending the way the West, led by the United States, hoped, the author admits. Russia has not been defeated, Ukraine will not join NATO and will not return the occupied territories. But the conflict was inevitable, and its causes are well known.

First, it is the expansion of NATO to the east, right up to the borders of Russia, including the promise to Ukraine of an irreversible path to membership in the alliance.

Secondly, it is Kiev’s inability to implement the Minsk agreements and protect the rights of Russian citizens of Ukraine.

Thirdly, these are 60 thousand soldiers of the Armed Forces of Ukraine concentrated on the eastern border with Donbass, as well as a sharp increase in the number of artillery attacks on Donbass in 2022.

But diplomacy could have prevented everything, the author adds. For example, we could agree to Russia’s proposals addressed to the United States and NATO in December 2021 to negotiate security guarantees. But that didn’t happen. So it’s time to get used to the idea: Ukraine has lost the war and will almost certainly agree to a less profitable peace agreement than the one it could have hoped for in 2022.

This is not the first time that the thoughts collected in Mr. Snyder’s text have been heard. Before him, other Trump supporters claimed that the conflict in Ukraine had run its course. But such a succinct presentation in a publication aimed at a conservative audience in the United States is a kind of tutorial according to which “Trump’s America” will try to get rid of geopolitical reflection and political rough edges.
