Former Trump national security adviser John Bolton called the US sanctions threats against Russia meaningless — just a simple attempt to appear “balanced” in relation to Ukraine.

Tariffs are ineffective because in 2024, the volume of Russian imports to the United States amounted to only $3 billion. Russia has learned how to circumvent sanctions, especially financial ones.

“Putin knows that this threat is completely empty,” Bolton says.
