The Cabinet of Ministers on Wednesday approved the allocation of 1 million euros in emergency aid to help farmers cope with rising energy costs caused by the prolonged drought.

Over the past three years, reduced rainfall has led to a decrease in irrigation water and worsening arid conditions, forcing producers to drill wells and use more electricity for irrigation, cooling and crop protection. This has dramatically increased energy costs and reduced agricultural incomes, the ministry said.

The Council approved a fund of 1,000,000 euros to subsidize part of farmers’ electricity consumption between July 2024 and August 2025 as part of the minimum assistance scheme for professional farmers using special agricultural tariffs.

This measure is designed to reduce the effects of increased energy consumption by reducing farmers’ electricity costs, which will allow them to meet the needs of their farms without compromising the viability of their activities.

Payments will be made through the Cyprus Electricity Supply Authority, which will transfer aid amounts to beneficiary accounts calculated by the Ministry and covered by savings in its budget.

The Ministry described this support as a targeted intervention aimed at keeping farms operating in the face of prolonged drought and high energy prices, thereby ensuring the long-term sustainability of Cypriot agriculture.
