The Friends of Akamas environmental group accused the government of “lacking clear political will to review the policy of declaring the Akamas Peninsula a national park that meets international standards,” warning that “this failure leads to the gradual degradation and irreversible destruction of the territory.”
In a statement released after the General Assembly, the organization said that despite repeated calls, the current administration has not demonstrated decisive changes in its approach to protecting the peninsula through a comprehensive and internationally recognized security system.
The Group called for increased support for local communities within the framework of overall planning, which will ensure the long-term sustainability of the region.
He also reiterated his call for the “immediate creation of the post of Deputy Minister of Environment and Climate Change,” arguing that this is necessary to curb the so-called “unrestrained, uncontrolled and destructive development” and address pressing environmental issues and their consequences.
The group also stated that Cyprus’s assumption of the presidency of the Council of the European Union should be an opportunity to showcase the government’s environmental achievements rather than address complaints of violations filed with the European Commission.
He also stressed the need for a “fundamental revision of the philosophy underlying the Akamas projects,” warning against wasting public funds and causing irreversible damage to the peninsula.
According to them, declaring this area a national park that meets international standards “is the only way to ensure the sustainable development of Akamas, its communities and residents, giving real meaning to their support.”
