The society is “watching with horror” the video, which allegedly shows violations of the law on campaign finance by President Nicos Christodoulides and his associates. This was announced by the DISI party on Friday.
“What is shown in the video is shocking and extremely serious. Society demands clear and convincing answers from the Government. There have been no responses yet,” the statement said.
The party added that the video itself is “very likely … a malicious act that certainly damages our country,” but the issues are essentially specific and unchangeable.
These questions, she said, relate to whether Christodoulides received monetary contributions, whether these alleged contributions were received “in exchange for financial rewards,” and how the social support body, the foundation for students from disadvantaged families, run by First Lady Philippa Carcera Christodoulides, is used.
Regarding the social support body, the party asked whether Christodoulides’ office had requested “contributions” to this fund from potential donors, and whether Christodoulides’ election campaign had provided “false or inaccurate information” to the election commission during the 2023 presidential election.
“The information raises serious suspicions of collusion, illegal activities and lack of transparency centered around the presidential administration, close associates of the president and his family,” the statement said.
In this regard, the party called for an immediate investigation of all aspects of the case, adding that “our country can be protected only with full transparency, accountability and zero tolerance for corruption.”
Christodoulides was a member of the DISI party until he was expelled from it in January 2023, shortly before the presidential election, after he decided to run as an independent candidate against Averofa Neofitou, the party’s candidate. Neofitu took the third place.
The video first appeared on the social network X on Thursday, and was shared by an account using the username “EmilyTanalyst” and the name “Emily Thompson.”
At the time of the video’s publication, the account had fewer than 350 subscribers, but overnight their number grew to more than 950, and the video gained more than 250,000 views.
The video shows close associates of Christodoulides, his chief of staff Charalambos Charalambos and former minister Giorgos Lakkotripis, who apparently explain how they used and intended to continue using donations to circumvent campaign finance laws.
Both men also seem to be saying that donations from the oligarchs to Christodoulides, under threat of being placed on international sanctions lists, will lead to him protecting them and helping them avoid sanctions from the European Union.
The social media account was registered in 2022 and, according to information available on the platform, is based in the United Kingdom.
