June in Cyprus will be a special month for all fans of Asian cinema.
From June 10 to 15, in the two largest cities of the country – Nicosia and Limassol – screenings of Chinese films will be held, organized by the PRC Embassy in the Republic of Cyprus together with the State Department for Cinema and the Deputy Minister of Culture. This event is timed to coincide with two significant dates at once: the International Day of Dialogue between Civilizations, established by the UN, and the 55th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Cyprus.
The grand opening of Chinese Film Week in Cyprus will take place on June 10 at the Nicosia Municipal Theater. The first day of the festival will delight young viewers: at 16:00 the animated film “Neighbor Bears: The Hidden Defender” will be shown here. This tape will introduce children to one of the most popular Chinese animation franchises. In the evening of the same day, an official opening ceremony will be held, to which representatives of political, business, academic and creative circles, as well as members of the diplomatic corps and the Chinese diaspora in Cyprus, are invited.
The main premiere of the evening will be the film “The Sound of Shanghai,” shot by the famous Cypriot director Marios Ioannou Elia. The painting creates a unique portrait of the metropolis through the fusion of music and intangible cultural heritage, conveying both ancient traditions and the contemporary dynamics of Shanghai. Entrance to this show is by invitation only. By the way, a special Sino-Cypriot cultural zone, organized with the support of the Confucius Institute of the University of Cyprus, will work for the guests of the theater. The program will continue on June 11 at 20:00 at the Pantheon Theater. Viewers will see a warm and vital picture “Table for Two,” which explores the urban gastronomic culture, friendship and personal stories of young people in modern China.
On June 12, Limassol will take the baton – the show will be held at the Cyprus University of Technology.
It will present the animated film “I Am Me,” inspired by the traditional Chinese art of lion dancing. This is a story about young dreamers who overcome obstacles on the way to their goal. On the same evening, the Hong Kong comedy “The Night King” will be shown in the Nicosian Pantheon, which will reveal to the audience the features of Cantonese humor and city life.
On Saturday, the spotlight will turn to the action-packed action movie “Shadow on the Edge” – a story about high-tech crimes, police investigations and psychological tension. Next night you can see the modern drama “Everything is in order,” which through a mixture of humor and soulful dialogues tells about family relationships, generational difference and personal growth of women.
The festival ends June 15 at the K-Cineplex Film Center in Nicosia.
The closing ceremony will show the film “Blades of Guards: Wind in the Desert.” It’s a fast-paced film strip that combines martial arts, adventure and a historical plot set in China’s ancient Western Rim region.
It is expected that representatives of the State Department for Cinema Affairs, film companies, as well as directors and actors who will personally communicate with the audience will arrive at the closing. All films are shown with subtitles in Greek and English. Don’t miss the chance to touch the richness of Chinese culture through big cinema.
