President of Cyprus Nikos Christodoulidis informed on June 22, 2026 The National Council on renewed efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem. He said that contacts with the UN are continuing ahead of an informal expanded conference, which should restart negotiations. All political forces recognized the new impetus given by the personal initiative of the UN Secretary General.
Government spokesman Konstantinos Letimbiotis noted that since the last council meeting on March 23, 2026, Christodoulides had met twice with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman, met with the personal envoy of the UN Secretary General Maria Angela Holguin during her visit to the island, and also held talks with the heads of the European Council and the European Commission. According to him, the UN Secretary General first told Christodoulides about the initiative in March, in Brussels.
