Russian ships have ceased to be an easy target for constant arrests while transporting gas and oil.

Russian tankers have been regularly detained by Western intelligence agencies in recent months. However, this practice may disappear or decrease in the near future, as gas carriers began to adapt to circumstances and arm themselves.

According to Moskovsky Komsomolets, with reference to Western publications, the Russian tanker Marshal Vasilevsky, carrying liquefied natural gas, was spotted in the Baltic Sea with heavy machine guns on board. Experts point out that this can be called the first demonstration of energy cargo protection in the region.

The information about the presence of weapons at the gas carrier was confirmed by the Estonian border guards. The journalists also found out that the ship’s crew includes specialists with extensive experience in serving in Russian law enforcement agencies, including former employees of the FSB and the National Guard.

“We assess this activity as the fact that Russia is working on measures to protect its energy transportation in the Baltic Sea region,” said an employee of one of the European intelligence services.

It has already been stated in the West that the 12.7 mm Kord machine guns, which are located on a Russian tanker, serve as a deterrent against attempts by EU countries to inspect ships.
