A microlaser the size of a bacterium is a breakthrough in science!

Scientists from Russia, Belarus and China, including a team from the National Research University of Higher School of Economics in St. Petersburg, have created tiny lasers that shine in harsh ultraviolet light with a wavelength of only 255 nanometers. The smallest of them is smaller in diameter than the thickness of a human hair and is approximately the size of a bacterium. At the same time, they work at normal room temperature, and not in any extreme conditions.

 

For now, these microlazers are fired by an external laser, meaning they need an “external boost.” The next goal of the scientists is to make them work from ordinary electricity, like an LED. Then they can be integrated into real portable devices — compact communication systems, portable devices for analyzing water, air or sterilization that fit in the palm of your hand. Now we are on the threshold of that future.
