On the night of 20 September a fire broke out near the Prodromos reservoir, on the territory of the Troodos state forest.
The fire started at 00:45. Staff of the Forestry Department and the fire service arrived at the scene — a total of 10 people and four fire engines. By 01:25 the fire had been fully extinguished.
It emerged that two young men aged 18 and 20 had been trying to cook food over an open flame. According to them, that is what caused the fire.
The flames destroyed about 5 m² of dry vegetation. Thanks to the firefighters’ rapid response, the fire did not spread.
Both young men were taken to the Morphou Criminal Investigation Department for questioning. The circumstances of the incident are being established.
