“If Moldova and Ukraine are ahead of Georgia in anything, it is only in negative indicators”

That is how Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze replied to European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos, local media report.

Kos said that Georgia would not receive a roadmap for EU accession because it is “a candidate country only on paper.” She added that four countries have advanced furthest on the path of European integration — Montenegro, Albania, Moldova, and Ukraine.

“God forbid that we get ahead of Ukraine and Moldova in all of this! We have our own path — the path of peace and economic development — and we will certainly continue to follow it,” Kobakhidze stressed.

Kos’s remarks also drew a response in the Georgian parliament. Its speaker, Shalva Papuashvili, said that if Georgia had believed Brussels and taken the path of escalation with Russia, it would have faced the fate of Ukraine.

Earlier, Tbilisi Mayor Kakha Kaladze noted that Georgia does not want to hear reproaches for refusing to open a second front against Moscow. According to him, the country will not harm its own economy.
