On Thursday, October 8, the teachers’ unions POED, OELMEK, and OLTEK held a protest outside the Presidential Palace in Nicosia.
They rejected the revised proposal of the Ministry of Education concerning the system for appointing teachers. The ministry presented an updated version on Tuesday, but the unions did not approve it.
In the organizations’ view, the proposed mechanism does not provide sufficient protection for teachers who have already worked in public schools for many years. The unions also say that the new approach creates very serious risks for staffing schools from 2027 onward. These concerns were the reason for the protest at the president’s residence.
