In Cyprus they want to reduce multi-year delays in the courts:

the head of the Supreme Court acknowledged that citizens’ trust in justice is declining.

⚖️ The President of the Supreme Court of Cyprus, Katerina Stamatiou, stated that one of the main problems of the judicial system is the excessively long consideration of cases.

📉 According to data from the European Commission for 2026, 39% of citizens and 34% of companies trust the independence of the Cypriot courts. In 2025 these indicators were higher — 42% and 44%.

According to Stamatiou, in order to change the situation it is necessary to consider old cases more quickly, transfer the work of the courts to a digital format, improve infrastructure, and change the organization of the judicial system.

🏛️ Part of the reforms is already being carried out: the rules of civil procedure have been changed, the Maritime Court has begun work, and the creation of a Commercial Court is also planned.

The head of the Supreme Court emphasized that it is important for people not only to know about the independence of the courts, but also in practice to receive a fair decision without multi-year waiting. It is precisely this, in her opinion, that should help restore society’s trust in justice.
