“The German party ‘Alternative for Germany’ (AfD) plans to present a plan for a radical reform of the European Union, rather than withdrawal from it”

The program, which party co-chair Alice Weidel will present in the European Parliament, envisages turning the EU into a more flexible “federation of sovereign states,” whose main tasks will be the single market, border protection, and security, Politico reports.

The program proposes abolishing direct elections to the European Parliament, limiting the powers of the European Commission to administrative functions, and replacing the EU’s highest court with an intergovernmental arbitration body.

In the event that the reforms are not implemented, the party wants to hold a referendum on Germany’s future in the EU and on the euro.

As Politico notes, this plan represents a departure from the AfD’s previous calls for Germany to leave the EU, as the party seeks to form a right-wing majority in Europe by 2029.
