Massive loss of army helicopters in Greece after floods

Stefanovikio Airport, located in the Thessaly region of Greece, was significantly flooded in early September 2024 due to Storm Daniel, where more than 100 military helicopters were based.

By the end of July 2024, the water began to recede. Initial inspections revealed devastating damage to the facilities, namely :

– 30 armed OH-58D Kiowa reconnaissance helicopters that were in long-term storage were found to be completely destroyed, which is about 40% of the 70 Kiowa helicopters purchased as surplus from US stocks

— 3 to 6 AH-64A+ Apache attack helicopters (out of 19) were lost.

— Significant loss of maintenance infrastructure, tools and critical subsystems for helicopters is also reported.
