Cyprus has recorded the first case of West Nile virus infection this year

The authorities reported that an elderly man from the village of Mammari (near Nicosia) was infected, who is currently in critical condition. The representative of the sanitary service, Irodotos Irodotou, said that work had begun urgently on the processing of the territory to identify possible breeding sites for mosquitoes.

Herodotus was assured that the virus is not transmitted from person to person, but is spread through mosquito bites. Although most of those infected do not experience symptoms, people over the age of 50 who have health problems are at increased risk. Symptoms include fever, headaches, and joint pain.
