The Cypriot authorities have approved the creation of a national strategy for the LGBTI community

On October 9, the Cabinet of Ministers of the Republic of Cyprus approved the creation of a national strategy for the LGBTI community. According to the Cyprus News Agency, Panagiotis Palates, a special representative for working with citizens, has been appointed coordinator of the project. He stressed that “this is another project that we are implementing based on the pre-election statements of President Nikos Christodoulides.”

The committee will include representatives of the Accept Cyprus organization and the Ministries of Justice, Education, Internal Affairs and Health. The Commission will hold its first meeting next week and will immediately begin to consider all the problems reported by the LGBTI community. Academic support is expected from a scientist who will be appointed to the committee after the approval of the Ministry of Justice.

According to the Special Commissioner for Citizens’ Rights, “the main directions of the national LGBTI strategy will be to bring the laws of the Republic of Cyprus into line with the laws of the European Union, focus on combating discrimination, ensuring equality and security of citizens, as well as building an inclusive society for everyone without exception.”
