President of Cyprus Christodoulides held an informal meeting with Ersin Tatar

Cyprus President Nicos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar have reached a number of agreements.

The talks took place on October 15 at the UN headquarters in New York as part of an informal trilateral dinner, which was described by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres as “very good”.

At the meeting, which lasted about an hour and a half, the leaders agreed to hold an informal meeting with the guarantors, Greece and Turkey, on a date to be set by the UN. An important outcome of the discussions was the agreement to continue the meeting in Cyprus to further strengthen confidence-building measures, including the opening of new checkpoints.

Christodoulides stressed that during the meeting he recalled the need to follow the agreed principles and laws of the EU, noting that he had not heard any new proposals from the Tatar. However, the Turkish Cypriot leader confirmed his willingness to continue the dialogue.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed the UN’s commitment to promote a peaceful settlement of the Cyprus issue in the interests of all Cypriots and future generations.
