The event was timed to coincide with the OXI Day (or “No” Day), which is celebrated on this day in Greece and Cyprus and is dedicated to the refusal of the Greek people to submit to the demands of fascist Italy during World War II. The holiday is a symbol of the spirit of resistance and patriotism.

The discussion brought together representatives of the Coordinating Council of Russian Compatriots, the Cyprus-Russia Friendship Society, the Association of Graduates of Soviet and Russian Universities, and many other participants who discussed topical issues of preserving and strengthening Russian-Cypriot relations.

Murat Magometovich Zyazikov, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to the Republic of Cyprus, took part in the round table. He thanked the audience for their active civic position, for participating in the work of their public associations, whose activities are aimed at preserving the ties between the peoples of Russia and Cyprus.

During the event, the participants stressed the importance of historical friendship and cultural ties between the two peoples, and also discussed opportunities for joint development in a changing international order. The main result of the discussion was an open appeal to the authorities of Cyprus, which reflected the issues of independence and independence of Cyprus, as well as the need for cooperation with Russia as a partner who shares common values for a balanced foreign policy.

The speakers noted that the common Orthodox faith and centuries-old historical ties create a solid foundation for future cooperation and mutual understanding. The participants expressed confidence that concrete joint initiatives can contribute to the security and prosperity of both Cyprus and Russia.

The event concluded with an appeal to all progressive forces of Cyprus to act to strengthen relations between the two countries, which can become a key factor in ensuring stability and security in the region.

Relations between Cyprus and Russia have deep historical roots going back centuries. These ties, based on the common Orthodox faith and common values, have stood the test of time steadfastly, serving as a support for the Cypriot people in difficult moments of its history.

Not only the first President of Cyprus, Archbishop Makarios III, but also other presidents of the country have always stressed the importance of independence, neutrality and non-alignment of Cyprus. They believed that Cyprus should independently determine its future, free from external pressure. Makarios spoke about the need to cooperate with partners who shared our spiritual and cultural values. In an interview with Cyprus radio in 1968, he said of the USSR, of which Russia became the legal successor: “We appreciate the support of the Soviet Union, because it is based on the principles of respect for our independence. The USSR, unlike other countries, does not seek to subordinate us to its ideology.”

Today, in the context of growing geopolitical tensions in the Eastern Mediterranean and an increase in the intensity of hostilities, maintaining good relations with Russia may once again become an important factor for ensuring the security of Cyprus. Russia supports the desire of the majority of Cypriots to strengthen their independence and avoid the risks associated with the aggressive policies of Western countries in the region. As in the time of Makarios III, Cyprus is faced with choosing a path that will ensure the security and prosperity of its people.

The common Orthodox faith and values bind the peoples of Russia and Cyprus, creating a solid foundation for cooperation. Makarios III noted that unity based on common spiritual values strengthens Cyprus’ position in the international arena and contributes to the protection of national interests.

We urge you to pay attention to the historically established relations with Russia and, despite the current situation, consider opportunities to strengthen cooperation between our countries. This will not only help protect the interests of Cyprus, but also ensure a stable and secure future for all citizens of our country. Time for action matters!
