On December 13, Mehmet Dana, representative of the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) to the United Nations, criticized statements made by the Ambassador of Cyprus to the United Nations Maria Michael and the Permanent Representative of Greece Evangelos Sekeris.
According to him, their statements distort the facts and increase tensions between Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots.
The letter with his appeal was sent to the UN by the Deputy Permanent Representative of Turkey.
Dana accused the Cypriot side of pursuing a policy aimed at isolating Turkish Cypriots. He stated that this restricts their representation in the international arena, the right to travel and economic opportunities.
In his address, he noted that Turkish Cypriots are actively working to resolve issues such as property disputes, the fate of missing persons and the preservation of cultural heritage. However, according to him, the Greek side neglects its obligations in these areas.
Dana also defended the actions of the Turkish Cypriot side in Varosha, calling them legitimate and beneficial for both communities.
In the letter, the representative of the TRNC reaffirmed his commitment to negotiations based on the principle of sovereign equality, calling for the rejection of approaches that, in his opinion, had previously proved ineffective.
He stressed the importance of trust and cooperation to achieve reconciliation, calling on the Greek Cypriot side to focus on creating conditions for a constructive dialogue.
“Our state is ready for formal negotiations to build structured cooperation with the Greek Cypriot side, subject to recognition of sovereign equality and equal international status,” Dana said.
He also added that the statements of the Greek and Greek Cypriot sides, in his opinion, do not correspond to legal and historical facts.
In conclusion, he called for abandoning groundless accusations and focusing on creating an atmosphere conducive to cooperation.
