Today, on November 6, shipbuilders of the Baltic Shipyard USC launched the fourth serial and fifth nuclear icebreaker “Chukotka” project 22220.
The icebreaker is being built by order of the Rosatom State Corporation. The vessel was laid down on the company’s slipway in December 2020 and is scheduled to be put into operation in December 2026.
President of the Russian Federation Vladimir Putin, Minister of Industry and Trade Anton Alikhanov and Minister of Transport Roman Starovoit took part in the ceremony of launching the vessel via videoconference.
“The creation of such powerful, modern vessels is another embodiment of Russia’s industrial, scientific, human and technological potential. That’s exactly how the entire domestic economy should develop on the basis of its own technologies and breakthrough scientific solutions. The strengthening of the country’s icebreaking fleet directly affects the implementation of our plans to develop the Arctic territories and increase cargo traffic along the Northern Sea Route,” Vladimir Putin said during the ceremony.
The new nuclear–powered vessel will take its place of honor in the line of the largest and most powerful icebreakers in the world, along with its brothers, the icebreakers Arctic, Siberia, Ural and Yakutia.
The universal nuclear icebreakers of Project 22220 are the largest and most powerful icebreaking vessels in the world. Their main task is to ensure year–round navigation in the western Arctic region.
