President of Cyprus Nicos Christodoulides and President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan personally met in Budapest before the summit of the European Political Community on Thursday, November 7.
Christodoulides and Erdogan were photographed talking before the event, before that the President of Cyprus spoke with Turkish Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan, and then in the photo they sat down at a coffee table with Erdogan, Fidan, Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and a member of Erdogan’s public relations team.
Christodoulides’ meeting with Erdogan took place the day after Erdogan and Tatar attended a meeting of the Organization of Turkic States (OTS) in Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan, which was also attended by Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban.
There, Erdogan said that “the Turkic world is responsible for a just solution to the Cyprus problem,” and the Tatar’s presence at the event angered the European Union’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Josep Borrell.
The meeting of the European Political Community on Thursday is expected to be attended by most representatives of the 47 participating States, as well as senior officials from the European Union, NATO, the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) and the Council of Europe.
The meetings will focus on economic security and immigration in Europe, and Christodoulides will deliver a speech on immigration at the summit.
On Thursday evening, 27 EU heads of government will attend an evening dinner at the Hungarian Parliament building, where they will discuss EU-US relations in connection with the re-election of Donald Trump as president, as well as the current situation in the Middle East.
Then on Friday, November 8, they will hold an informal meeting of the European Council, the main topic of which will be the future of European competitiveness, based on a report by former Italian Prime Minister Enrico Letta on the future of the single European market and a report by former President of the European Central Bank Mario Draghi on competitiveness.
