The Minister of Agriculture of Cyprus, Maria Panayiotou, said on Thursday, November 7, that such traditional quality products as haloumi, kolokasi and commandaria are the national treasure of the country.
The Minister spoke at the second CyFood B2B Forum in Larnaca, which, according to her, is an event that “undoubtedly strengthens the local economy”, while connecting the business world of hospitality and catering with the world of production and marketing of agricultural products.
In her speech, she stressed the importance of Cypriot traditional products, especially those that are already registered in the European Register of Geographical Indications.
Panayiotou also mentioned a recent presentation on the 800th anniversary of the recognition of commandaria at the headquarters of the International Organization of Grapes and Wine (OIV) in Dijon, France.
She stressed that Cyprus’ national products play a central role in promoting Cypriot cuisine both in the local hospitality and catering sectors and in export markets. She also stated that the government strives to maintain a balance between tradition and innovation, as well as ensure the integration of culinary skills with modern technology.
“The government and the Ministry of Agriculture maintain the authenticity, highest quality and uniqueness of Cypriot agricultural products through the protection provided by geographical indications and appropriate quality systems,” she said.
Panagiotou recalled that on October 2, the Council of Ministers approved a new strategy, which is a commitment under the governance program of President Nikos Christodoulides. This strategy is “not just another initiative, but a roadmap reflecting the Ministry and government’s vision for the future of Cypriot agriculture.”
If we consider the production process, from primary production in agricultural and livestock enterprises to artisanal and industrial processing, as well as services related to the sector, “a significant contribution to the creation and maintenance of jobs for our local communities is immediately obvious.”
