On January 16, the Green Party conducted a rescue operation at a sewage treatment plant in the village of Deftera (Nicosia district). During the event, two dogs were extracted from the septic tank, which found themselves in a deadly situation. One was injured and is currently undergoing treatment, while the other escaped and immediately disappeared.
The incident was witnessed by a local resident, who immediately informed the activists about the incident. This allowed us to provide the necessary assistance to the animals in time. The male activists who arrived at the call examined the territory and revealed serious deficiencies in the security system of the sewage treatment plants. According to them, such incidents occur regularly: dead dogs, cats and even foxes were found in the tanks.
The Green Party demanded that the Ministry of Agriculture explain the lack of necessary fences at this dangerous facility and take measures to prevent similar cases in the future.
“How is this possible? Who is responsible for this? We demand to immediately investigate and secure the area to ensure the protection of people and animals so that such incidents never happen again. We urge the President of Cyprus to take initiatives to ensure genuine animal welfare in Cyprus. If another animal dies in this tank, it will be a question of criminal negligence towards animals on the part of the state. We also expect that the Commissioner for Environment and Animal Welfare will ensure that no more dead animals are found in the tank,” the Green Party members said.
