NICOSIA, December 5th. /tass/.

The American destroyer USS The Sullivans (DDG-68) docked at the seaport of Larnaca. This was announced on the X social network by the US Ambassador to Nicosia Julie Fisher.

According to her, the USS The Sullivans is in Larnaca “during its deployment in The Eastern Mediterranean”. The head of the American diplomatic mission recalled that the destroyer was named after the five Sullivan brothers who died in 1942 in the naval battle for Guadalcanal off the Solomon Islands.

The Greek newspaper Kathimerini reported that the American ship that entered the port of Larnaca is an Arleigh Burke-class destroyer and is equipped with guided missile weapons. The message says that the visit of the USS The Sullivans to Cyprus is taking place during a planned deployment designed to maintain maritime security and promote stability in the region. The publication suggests that the destroyer’s crew will most likely replenish supplies and take a short pause before resuming operations, which often include joint exercises with the Navies of the US allies and other missions to ensure freedom of navigation.

According to the newspaper, shortly before its entry into the Cypriot port, the destroyer was in In the Mediterranean Sea and in the eastern Atlantic Ocean, providing missile defense and supporting humanitarian and security missions, including during the recent conflict between Israel and the radical Palestinian movement Hamas.

According to Kathimerini, the mooring of the USS The Sullivans in Larnaca symbolizes the strong ties between the United States and Cyprus, emphasizing the island’s strategic importance in the dynamics of regional security. In recent months, other U.S. Navy ships have also entered the seaports of Cyprus. For example, in August and October, the universal amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD-1) moored in Limassol, the first visit of which caused protests on the island, and in September, the Harpers Ferry landing dock ship USS Oak Hill (LSD 51) visited the port of the same Cypriot city.

Relations between Nicosia and Washington have significantly strengthened over the past autumn. So, in September, between the Ministry of Defense of Cyprus and The Pentagon signed a roadmap for defense cooperation, and the first round of strategic dialogue between Cyprus and the United States took place in Nicosia in October. Later that month, Cyprus President Nikos Christodoulides visited the White House at the invitation of his American counterpart Joe Biden. Last week, the head of the island state said that Nicosia is negotiating with Washington on ways for Cyprus to join NATO.
