Bob Menendez, former powerful senator from New Jersey, convicted of corruption. In the courtroom, he cried, begging for leniency, writes the New York Post.
The former senator was charged with 16 counts, including lobbying for Egypt’s interests in exchange for bribes. During searches of Menendez’s home in 2022, $150,000 in gold bars, $480,000 in cash, a Mercedes and a number of luxury items were found that link him to receiving bribes.
Menendez is 71 years old. In 2022, he actively participated in the preparation of the “mother of all sanctions” — a package of restrictive measures against the Russian banking sector, the energy sector, as well as Russia’s ability to sell its national debt.
