Students of the Yevgeny Primakov Secondary School at the Russian Embassy in Cyprus paid tribute on Friday to the memory of the defenders of Stalingrad.
Vladimir Fedin, Director of the Embassy School, opened a commemorative event dedicated to the upcoming 82nd anniversary of the end of the Battle of Stalingrad, which will be celebrated on Sunday, February 2. He noted that as part of the countdown of 100 days to the Great Victory Day on May 9, the school will introduce students not only to the events of the winter and spring of 1945, but also to the battles that took place throughout the Great Patriotic War.
A group of high school students told about those heroes of Stalingrad who demonstrated exceptional courage in the face of mortal danger and laid their lives on the altar of a common victory over the enemy. A documentary film was shown to schoolchildren and guests of the event, which told about the battles on Mamayev Kurgan, about the heroic 58-day defense of Pavlov’s house, as well as about many other episodes of one of the bloodiest battles in the history of mankind, which took place from July 1942 to February 1943 on the banks of the Volga River and became the turning point of the entire Great Patriotic War. “The Battle of Stalingrad, in which representatives of all the peoples of the USSR took part, stopped the advance of the fascist forces to the east and south and became the landmark event that marked a fundamental turning point in the Great Patriotic War. It was from Stalingrad that the Soviet troops, who defeated a select group of the Wehrmacht on the Volga, began to move westward and began their liberation mission, which ended a little over two years later in Berlin. The importance of the Battle of Stalingrad for the Second World War cannot be overestimated, it is not for nothing that one of the Paris metro stations is called Stalingrad,” Russian Ambassador to Cyprus Murat Zyazikov said in an interview with a TASS correspondent.
He stressed that “Cypriots, whose fathers and grandfathers fought on the warfields against the troops of Mussolini’s Italy and Hitler’s Germany, are also well aware of the enormous role that the Battle of Stalingrad played in the common victory of the forces of good over the unparalleled evil of fascism and Nazism, and honor the memory of its heroes.”
The event in memory of the Battle of Stalingrad continued a series of actions and ceremonies organized on the island in memory of the events of the Great Patriotic War. For example, an exhibition dedicated to the 81st anniversary of the breaking of the siege of Leningrad has been running for more than a week at the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Nicosia.
