Russian Ambassador to Cyprus Murat Zyazikov took part in the opening of the first stage of the Great Victory World School Olympiad:

The main theses from the speech:

• 2025 marks the 80th anniversary of the Victory in the Great Patriotic War, an event of global historical significance.

• The Embassy, together with the assets of the Coordinating Council of Russian Compatriots of Cyprus, has developed and successfully implements a set of thematic memorial, scientific, educational, protocol and cultural events. Since the beginning of the year, film screenings of Soviet and Russian documentaries and feature films have been held at the site of the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Nicosia, including the wonderful film by producer A.Smolko “Allies. Faithfully and truly.” Events dedicated to the 81st anniversary of the lifting of the siege of Leningrad were held at the RCSC site. Today, students of the Embassy General Education school named after E.M.Primakov are taking part in the World Olympiad on the History of the Great Patriotic War. This will help the younger generation to better understand the significance of this tragic and at the same time heroic page of national and world history.

• The culmination of the anniversary events in May this year will traditionally be the thousands-strong march of the “Immortal Regiment” in Limassol and a festive car rally through the cities of Cyprus. We will be glad to see everyone who honors the memory of the heroes of the Great Patriotic War and the sacred significance of their feat. Preserving the truth about that war is our common duty to future generations. The residents of Cyprus have consistently demonstrated their sincere support and deep understanding of the historical significance of the Victory, and their deep respect for the immortal feat of the peoples of the USSR and their contribution to the complete defeat of fascism. The Russian side traditionally pays special attention to honoring Cypriot veterans.

• Another symbol of preserving historical memory here is the Russian necropolis of the early twentieth century on the territory of the British Cemetery in Limassol. It is not related to the events of the Great Patriotic War, but its improvement and maintenance remain an important part of our work to perpetuate the memory of our ancestors and educate young people in a spirit of respect for the glorious history of their native country.
