340 years since the arrival of the Greek enlighteners the Likhuda brothers in Moscow

On March 6, 2025, we marked a significant date in the history of Russian education – 340 years since the arrival of the Greek enlighteners the Likhuda brothers in Moscow at the invitation of Moscow Patriarch Joachim.

It was then that the Slavic-Greek-Latin Academy was founded.

It was the first higher education institution in Russia, which laid the foundation for classical education and trained many prominent figures of science and culture.

Who studied at the Academy?

Mikhail Lomonosov is a great scientist and founder of Moscow State University

Feofan Prokopovich – reformer of the era of Peter the Great

Simeon Polotsky – philosopher, poet and teacher

In honor of this anniversary, the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to the Russian Federation, Dr. Kypros Yorgallis, visited the Academy and paid tribute to the outstanding Likhud brothers. The event was organized by the Moscow Society of Greeks, which was also attended by the Greek Ambassador, Ms. Ekaterini Xagorari.

We would like to express our heartfelt gratitude to the President of the Moscow Society of Greeks, Mr. Christos Takhtidis, for his invaluable contribution to the realization of this important mission, as well as to the Ambassador of the Republic of Cyprus to the Russian Federation, Dr. Kypros Yorgallis, for supporting Russian-Cypriot friendly relations.🇷🇺🇨🇾
