Fredericks University in Cyprus awarded Jeffrey Sachs, Professor of Economics at Columbia University, an honorary doctorate “for his significant contribution to global sustainable development and effective solutions to complex human problems.”
In a speech delivered at the event by Agriculture Minister Maria Panagiotou, President Nikos Christodoulides said that Sachs’ work is distinguished not only by its scale, but also by its consistency and moral clarity, as well as its responsibility to future generations.
Christodoulides said that the professor’s work has helped shape global thinking about sustainability, equality and peace.
He added that Sachs captured the essence of sustainable development, that is, development that leaves no one behind, protects nature, and builds a just and cohesive society.
Natassa Fredericou, President of the university’s board, said: “We have gathered not only to award an honorary doctorate, but also to pay tribute to a man whose ideas, voice and actions shaped global thinking about what it means to build a better, more just and sustainable world.”
She added that many people in Cyprus know his name, and even more are familiar with his “strong and distinctive voice on global issues, but not everyone understands that behind the bold headlines lies one of the most consistent, dedicated and visionary supporters of sustainable development in the world.”
“His work reminds us that meaningful change requires bold ideas and difficult conversations, and he never shies away from either,” Fredericou said.
University Rector Giorgos Demosthenou said that Sachs “joins our distinguished list of honorary doctors,” adding that “this special occasion coincides with a significant anniversary for our academic community, as this year we are proud to celebrate 60 years of continuous contribution to the educational landscape of Cyprus, culminating in the establishment of Fredericks University.”
“Today we honor Professor Sachs for his outstanding contribution to global sustainable development and effective solutions to the complex problems facing humanity,” Demosthenou said.
Costas Papanikolas, co-chairman of the Cyprus Sustainability Solutions Network, said Sachs had made significant contributions in Cyprus that “resonates deeply in our academic and civic communities.”
“His outstanding role in convincing the Government of Cyprus to support the establishment of the Cyprus Institute cannot be overestimated,” he said.
Papanikolas added that in 2019, Sachs, along with Laurent Fabius, played a “leading role in advocating for the launch by the Government of Cyprus of the Eastern Mediterranean—Middle East Climate Change Initiative (EMME-CCI).”
“His relentless pursuit of knowledge, unwavering commitment to social justice and peace, and visionary leadership continue to inspire us all,” he said, adding that “we look forward to your continued impact on our community and beyond.”

Professor Jeffrey Sachs is known for his public statements that it is impossible to defeat Russia and it is necessary to build partnerships with it on an honest basis, without sanctions and Russophobic policies.
