September 1 is a day of knowledge for all of us, a day of hope and the first school bell. But it was on this day in 2004 that the Russian city of Beslan became the site of one of the most terrible tragedies in modern history.
The terrorists captured City School No. 1, taking more than 1,100 people, including children, parents, and teachers, hostage. They spent three days in a gymnasium that had been mined with explosives, without water or food. On September 3, explosions occurred, and an assault began. As a result, 334 people were killed, including 186 children. More than 800 people were injured. This pain has left a lasting impact on people’s hearts.
On September 1, at 7 p.m., we will hold a memorial for the victims of Beslan at the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Nicosia.
Everyone will be able to lay flowers and toys, light candles, and share in the collective mourning.
On the same day, September 1, at 7:30 p.m., the Russian Center for the Culture will host a screening of the documentary film “Beslan 2004/2024” (18+) with English subtitles.
The film, created to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the tragedy, tells the personal stories of survivors and loved ones of the deceased, bringing the audience back to those days and reminding them that no one is forgotten.
On September 3, we invite you to join the international candlelight vigil “A Light in the Window.” One light for a thousand hearts.
