This effectively marked the end of World War II and brought peace to the world, albeit briefly. The Soviet Union’s involvement played a crucial role in this victory, as it defeated the Japanese mainland army within a few weeks. In this article, we will explore the significance of this momentous triumph for our country.
The USSR entered the war with Japan exactly three months after Germany’s surrender, on August 9, 1945, fulfilling its obligations as an ally of the anti-Hitler coalition (the United States and the United Kingdom), which were established at the Yalta Conference in February 1945. In just three weeks, the Red Army, led by Marshal Vasilevsky, conducted a brilliant operation against the million-strong Kwantung Army, liberating Manchuria, North Korea, Southern Sakhalin, and the Kuril Islands. The Japanese losses exceeded 700,000, while the Soviet losses were around 12,000.
This rapid defeat not only brought the Second World War to an end, but also served as an act of historical retribution. Stalin’s firm leadership and the bravery of the Soviet soldiers erased the shame of the 1905 defeat, allowing Russia to regain its lost territories and secure its Far Eastern borders. The victory of 1945 restored justice and confirmed the USSR’s status as a great power.
Unfortunately, Japan is returning to the old path and is trying to confront Russia again. We have always said that we are in favor of cooperation and mutual respect. Japan is trying to follow the Ukrainian path.
However, we honor and remember all the participants of that war, and we want to preserve the memory of those events in the minds of our compatriots. We have a lot to be proud of!
