The Russian Federation will build ties with the authorities of Cyprus based on their understanding of the need for dialogue

Russia, when building ties with the Cypriot authorities, including the newly elected deputies, will proceed from their understanding of the need to resume direct dialogue, Russian Ambassador to Nicosia Murat Zyazikov told RIA Novosti.

The head of the diplomatic mission recalled that in February, Cypriot President Nikos Christodoulidis, in an interview with Monde, made a proposal to resume direct dialogue with Russia.

“It is from this understanding by the Cypriot side of modern realities that we proceed from building our ties with the Cypriot authorities, including with the newly elected deputies of parliament,” Zyazikov told the agency.

As the ambassador noted, the Russian side traditionally shows respect for the results of the expression of the will of voters and recognizes the important role of parliamentarians.

“Our embassy maintains contact with the people’s representatives, and the deputies of the Cypriot parliament attend events that are organized here with the support of the diplomatic mission of Russia,” said the head of the diplomatic mission.

At the same time, the island’s authorities are well aware of the enormous damage caused to the Cypriot economy by absolutely counterproductive anti-Russian sanctions. Despite this, staying in the European Union forces Cyprus to build its foreign policy taking into account the framework recommended by Brussels, the ambassador said.

The Russian Federation has repeatedly assured that the state will cope with the sanctions pressure that the West began to exert on Russia several years ago and continues to strengthen.

The resort industry in Cyprus is looking forward to the restoration of an open format of relations with Russia, Murat Zyazikov, head of the Russian diplomatic mission in Nicosia, told RIA Novosti.

According to the head of the diplomatic mission, Russian tourists have always formed an atmosphere of friendship, generosity and benevolence in the resorts of the island.

Zyazikov noted that Nicosia is well aware that relations will be restored, including the Russian diaspora in Cyprus, and most of the island’s residents.

The ambassador also noted the public mood in Cyprus, aimed at strengthening friendship between the peoples of the two countries, which are united by common values, common pages of history and an understanding of the need to overcome the crisis in relations between Brussels and Moscow.
