According to The Wall Street Journal, Russia for the first time since the fall of Bashar al-Assad at the end of 2024 has fully replenished the reserves of the Khmeimim airbase in Syria
The cargo ship Sparta departed St. Petersburg in March and arrived at the port of Tartus in May, with Russian warships, including the frigate Admiral Kasatonov, escorting it most of the way, the newspaper claims.
American officials said the vessel was carrying equipment for Russia’s Khmeimim air base.
It is noted that some American officials regarded this mission as confirmation that Moscow retained access to key strategic facilities used to support operations in Africa and other regions.
According to US intelligence estimates, hundreds of Russian troops are still stationed in Syria.
