On June 22, commemorative events dedicated to the Day of Remembrance and Mourning and the 85th anniversary of the outbreak of the Great Patriotic War were held at the Russian Center for Science and Culture in Nicosia with the support of the Embassy of the Russian Federation in the Republic of Cyprus.
In the morning, a memorial service was held at St. Nicholas Church in Limassol for all those who died and were killed during the Great Patriotic War.
In the evening, a Memorial Candle action and a flower-laying ceremony took place on the site in front of the RCSC. Compatriots, representatives of youth activists and guests of the Center gathered together to honor the memory of millions of people who gave their lives for the freedom and independence of their Homeland.
Evgeny Eduardovich Demin, Director of the Russian Center for Science and Culture in the Republic of Cyprus, addressed the participants of the action with a welcoming speech. In his speech, he recalled the significance of this date for the history of our country and stressed the importance of preserving the memory of the feat of the generation of winners.
During the commemorative event, poems about the war and the feat of the Soviet people were performed by representatives of youth activists. The participants of the event remembered their relatives and friends — veterans, home front workers, children of war and all those who were affected by the tragic events of those years.
The action ended with a minute of silence. The participants laid out the number “85” from the lighted candles to mark the 85th anniversary of the beginning of the Great Patriotic War. After that, flowers were laid at the memorial stand.
The program continued with the screening of the feature film “Brest Fortress” with English subtitles, which tells about the heroic defense of the Brest Fortress in the early days of the war.
Also on this day, the guests of the Center were able to get acquainted with the exhibitions “The enemy will be defeated. Victory will be ours” and “Tragedy. Courage. Feat”, prepared by the Central Museum of the Great Patriotic War in Moscow, as well as the three-volume edition Without a Statute of Limitations, which presents documents from the open trials of Nazi criminals and their accomplices that took place in the USSR in 1943-1947.
The commemorative events will continue on June 23 at 3 p.m. at the Russian Center for Science and Culture.
Guests of the Center will be able to participate in the online lecture “June 22, 1941. The Beginning of the Great Patriotic War and the Heroic Defense of the Brest Fortress”, organized with the participation of the Victory Museum and the Brest Hero Fortress Memorial Complex.
Participants will learn about the first days of the Great Patriotic War, the causes of the severe defeats of the Red Army in the summer of 1941, as well as about the heroic deeds of the defenders of the Brest Fortress. After the lecture, there will be an opportunity to ask questions to specialists.
We invite compatriots, representatives of youth organizations, schoolchildren, students and anyone interested in the history of the Great Patriotic War.
