Microplastics have been found on the beaches of Cyprus for many years, and this is not news to experts. This was stated at the AKTI Project and Research Center, commenting on recent media publications and calls for urgent discussion of the problem.

The Center has been monitoring the beaches since 2022

AKTI has been monitoring microplastics on Cypriot beaches since 2022. Specialists regularly take samples of sand and sediments on ten sites of the coast and examine them in the laboratory. Over the past four years, microplastics have been found on all surveyed beaches. Among the finds are small plastic fragments, fibers, films, granules and foam particles.
