The Union of Sheep and Goat Producers Groups has addressed a letter to the Minister of Agriculture of Cyprus, Maria Panayiot, asking for urgent financial support for the industry due to measures to prevent and control foot-and-mouth disease. The association sent the text of the appeal to the media.

In the letter, the producers emphasize that they fully recognize the need for harsh measures to protect human and animal health, but their application “has led to an unbearable financial burden for producers who have to bear the costs of an emergency sanitary situation alone, which directly affects the viability of their farms.”

The association points to the consequences of restrictions on the movement of livestock, the prolonged delay in bringing lambs and goats to the market, as well as the drop in purchase prices for them — all this, the letter says, further worsens the situation of farms.
