Production of carbon fiber ship shafts for ships has begun in the Perm Region

Russia has developed and launched the production of carbon fiber ship shafts for ships and civilian vessels. Previously, such products were purchased abroad, including in Germany, and after 2022, supplies had to be sought in Asia.

The ship’s shaft transmits rotation from the main engine to the propeller. The new Russian design weighs about 3 times less than the classic metal version. If a conventional shaft can weigh about 1 ton, then a carbon fiber shaft can weigh about 300 kg.

In addition to the lower mass, this solution has several other advantages. The shaft reduces the noise of the ship and does not become magnetic, which is important for marine equipment. The manufacturer claims that it will be able to make such products of different lengths and diameters for vessels of any displacement.
